    Chelsea F C 1983-1992

To those of us who were lucky to see Kerry Dixon play we can have only fond memories. This was a player who had an immediate effect on our Football club. Brought into the team by manager John Neal, from Reading FC in August 1983 for the princely sum of 150k (plus an additional 25K not if but when he became an international) this was the start of exciting times for many of us long suffering Blues fans.

Two goals on his debut against Derby County set the scene for his career with Chelsea, bagging his way to 34 goals that season which helped take the Blues to the First Division as champions of the Second.

Just to underline the ability of the man (and our team at that time), he was joint top scorer of the First Division the next season sharing the golden boot with Gary Lineker, who let’s be honest poached his way to many a goal. Dixon did it with his head, left and right foot, no weakness in his game. He was strong, fast and of course had a superb team behind him with the likes of David Speedie and Pat Nevin, menacing the opposition with craft, guile and aggression

Injury in the 1986 season and relegation to Div 2 in 1988 could have dampened his desire but no, Kerry dug in and helped Chelsea to another Second Division title with 25 league goals

He did go on to play for several other clubs finishing up at non league Basildon United but he will always be remembered for scoring Chelsea goals, brilliantly half volleying in the ball at Highbury to equalise on our return to the top flight, nicking a goal at Old Trafford in the opening minutes for us to seal all three points.

So in two seasons at Chelsea Dixon scored 70 goals in 101 games!! And at the end of the day 335 League appearances over 9 seasons for the Blues returning 147 goals!! Simply a stunning professional footballers performance
